Health literate health care organizations (GKO)
- an inventory of existing concepts, working aids, guidelines and examples
Background
Available studies on health literacy show that large sections of the population and particularly vulnerable groups often have difficulties in dealing with health information. For Germany, the first representative health literacy study (HLS-GER) even concluded that more than half of the population has a low level of health literacy and thus has difficulties in accessing, understanding, appraising and applying health-related information. In response, there have been many efforts to strengthen health literacy. Health literate healthcare organizations play an important role in this context. It also forms the core of a recommendation in the National Action Plan for the Promotion of Health Literacy (NAP) in Germany.
Objective
This project aims to contribute to the development of health literate healthcare organizations (GKO's) in Germany. For this purpose, the question of how the implementation of GKOs in the German health care system can be promoted will be investigated. Various concepts, working aids, materials and instruments are already available internationally on this topic. However, they have not yet been prepared for the German health care system and its organizations. The aim of the project is therefore to take stock of existing concepts, approaches and examples of best practice and to examine the question of what terms and conditions are necessary to implement GKOs.
Approach
In a first step, a multi-stage systematic literature and material search (scoping review) is carried out to answer the research questions of the project. Based on this, workshops will be conducted with experts and stakeholders from primary and outpatient care. These are devoted to examining the transferability of the results to the German health care system and its organizations.
The results will be included in a report, which will be used by a partner project to develop an online-based method kit.
